Advanced Firewall was designed to meet the demanding needs of today's enterprise networks - the result is the most versatile network security solution available to fulfill the following roles:
Perimeter firewall - multiple Internet connections with load balancing and automatic connection failover
Internal firewall – segregation of networks into physically separate zones with user-level access control of inter-zone traffic
VPN Gateway - site-to-site, secure remote access and secure wireless connections
Web Content Filtering – block access to inappropriate and time wasting content (with SmoothGuardian add-on module)
Bandwidth Management – maximize net connection performance (with SmoothTraffic add-on module)
Policy based access control is the key to the operation of Advanced Firewall, with user authentication against a Microsoft Active DirectoryŽ or other LDAP server being used to determine the security policies applied to each user. Compared with simplistic rules based solely on the IP address of the computer, user based security policies provides far greater control, to both prevent unauthorized access and to block the spread of viruses and other malicious code.
With support for up to 20 network interfaces, Advanced Firewall allows the local network to be segregated into many physically isolated network zones, with the firewall strictly controlling what traffic can pass between zones. Inter-zone bridges are created and destroyed under the control of user authentication. Each inter-zone bridge permits the user computer to communicate with a specific computer in another zone using a specified port or service, for example POP3 email to a Microsoft Exchange server. Attempted access to other services on the same server would be blocked by Advanced Firewall.
Advanced Firewall is an "all in one" solution, and includes a security hardened, cut-down version of Linux. There is no separate operating system to install, configure, understand or maintain. It only takes a few minutes to install the software and convert a standard server into a dedicated firewall appliance. The use of standard server hardware provides for a flexible, inexpensive and upgradeable firewall platform that is much easier to support and service than a specialized hardware solution.
